1989 Cherokee Laredo-4 wheel drive problems.
Cruiser54, when I did the CAD modification (Yes ) I did remove the c clip and move the fork all the way to the left and put the c clip back on to the right of the fork. I heard the noise (which is constant now) coming from the front right side of the car this morning again.
The fork is all the way to the left is that correct???
Does the collar (don't know what else to call it) stay all the way to the left also?
The collar or ring holds the two parts of the axil together and it has to be over the split in the 2 axils???
I'm sure that what it is...I just have to figure out what's wrong.
It's not all tore up in there. The axils splines look good.
Thanks!~John
PS>Something is rubbing on something and making noise on the right side of the front end. Does something go bad on the outside of the axil (u-joint).
I don't know anything else about the axils, but I think it's something I did.
It's not making that loud clunking noise any more it is making a whining chirping noise (hard to explain), but it is constant in 2 wheel drive.

I have seen where bent axle housing cause the small bearing in one of the right shafts binds into the other shaft. Of course when the 2 piece right hand shaft is locked together, there is no movement on that bearing and therefor no noise.
I will pull the 4 bolts and look at it tomorrow (Saturday).
I know it's the collar not being in the right place.
Funny I heard from another post that a guy put an clamping on the axil to keep the (collar) ring in place between the 2 axils.
Another guy (never sent pictures) used washers and still another some type of round shim to keep the collar in the right place.
I think used bubble gum and duct tape.
Well, (being serious now) I think I figure it out and let people know what I find out.
Thanks!~John

Yes the vacuum is disconnected and lugged.
Haven't pulled the 4 bolts yet been pretty cold out and no garage yet.
Still driving the 89 Laredo, but only hear the noise in 2 wheel drive, not in 4 wheel drive.
When it wars up again I'll look at it.

My friend was asking me what "CAD" stands for and for the life if me, I don't know.
What does it stand for?
When I worked for the government they used a lot of abbreviations.
Thanks!~John

Hello!~Everyone, finally last Sunday I took the Cad off again to see what was going on and the collar was so far to the left that it wasn't connecting the two axils.
I rotated the axil and lined up the two shafts and slipped the collar over the two axils to see where the fork should be to keep them connected.
I had a bunch of play in the fork. I took off the other CAD off my parts Jeep.
The fork was not loose at all.
Then as I was taking off the c clip I noticed on the CAD from my Laredo that the one c clip was missing.
So I did the CAD bypass on the parts Jeep one and now the fork is locked into place and also the shaft.
Today in Mt. we have a few inches of snow and the 4 wheel drive is working fine and that makes me happy.
Thanks!~Everyone (Cruiser54). John
