Default 136 AMP high output alternators

Hello all. I saw a thread on here recently about upgrading alternators in the XJ. It mentioned specifically, " The alternator you want is the Denso ending with 7913. This is important because not every V8 ZJ has the 136A unit. 97+ is when it was used. " Does anyone have a bit more info on this particular alternator such as a complete part number and/or if it was ever used in the 4.0 ZJ? I was at the junkyard last week nosing around and was searching for this particular alternator and thought I saw this number on an alternator in a '98 GC but it only had the 4.0L I6. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that would be good info.

Somewhere I saw that you had to re-clock a Grand alternator for the wiring harness to fit for an XJ.

I did it on my 91. I got the alternator off eBay it was listed as fitting 84-01 cherokee and it was listed as 136a

It was also listed as fitting in a bunch of Chrysler and dodge vans, grand Cherokees and a few other vehicles.

I didn't take any pictures because when I did it it was to replace a premature failure of an alt and happened around 10pm-12pm

Basically you have to get the old alt out and them grind down the bracket to fit in the 136a. I had to just grind and check, over and over. If you have some contact paint stuff I say use that to see exactly where its hitting. You also have to use the wire guard off you current alt and switch it to the 136a, super simple.

You will want to upgrade you're wiring or you won't see any benefit from it other than a full functioning alt.

Oh and I recommend buying one off eBay unless you find a really nice one in the jy (clean, free spinning) I got mine for 65 bucks shipped and it was remanned.

You could get some decent trail repair welding done with a 136 amp alt. I think I'll be looking into this swap as well.

I would hesitate to use one thats good for an 84-01 XJ. The Renix years all used internal regulators, the newer ones have the regulator in the ECU...

Now that you say it. I think it did say 91-01. Its been about a year since I did it. I know it worked just fine and hooked up to my connections though.

^^That says its got an internal regulator...would that throw a CEL if the Jeep's regulator is in the ECU?

I thought I read somewhere about using an external regulator and getting a CEL.

That`s the page I was trying to download! Everytime I tried saving it it was coming up small in my folder. Anyway the main number you need worry about is the 56027913. I'm not sure about that big list of donor vehicles though. I think they change the electrical connections on the back of the alternator to make it work in a lot of those. I saw one in the local junkyard last weekend. I'm going back to grab it Saturday.
