Default 1157 v 2057 bulbs

What is the difference between the 1157 and the 2057 bulb? I traced a short on my passenger's side front cluster and found it was the bulb housing. After a quick stop at the JY, I was stuck clipping wires for a replacement bulb rather than getting the entire wiring for the front end (all harnesses were mangled). Turns out though that the bulb I got (off of an 80's MJ) was for a 2057 bulb rather than our 1157. It works fine so I'm not plannign to change it, but what is the difference between the two bulbs anyways?

That is what I thought, but the 1157 wouldn't work in the replacement bulb housing and the 2057 did. Strange huh?

1157 is 3 candle power for running lights and 32 c.p. for brake.
2057 is 2 c.p. and 32 c.p. DOT wanted a bigger difference between the tail and brake light. The 2057 lens refracts the light dirfferent.

So it is JUST a brightness issue? I wonder why my wiring wouldn't light up with the 1157, but lit up with the 2057. Both bulbs were knew and looked good. Maybe the 1157 was blown, but passed with visual inspection.

huh?

Default 1157 is more watts then the 2057

An auto parts store guy talked me into the 1157 instead of the 2057. At night with the tail lights already on and you step on the brake you can't see a difference in brightness between brake light and tail light with the 1157. I had to switch back to the 2057 in my cherokee.

Do you know what the 97+ bulb equivalent of this is? I have the black plug-in style connector, not the twist-in style.
