Default 01 XJ Check engine light - no codes?

So the check engine light just came on in my 2001 sport. I did the self diagnostic and the gauges all did their thing and the OD ran through 111111-999999 but then went right to the mileage - didn't show any codes. Previous owner said it needed a new evap hose and he's waiting for Chrysler to ship it and he'll get it to me. Could it just be this? Would I be ok driving it? I'm taking it to my grandfathers shop Monday for the A/C compressor already but there's a Jeep show this weekend...

Sounds like you did the instrument cluster actuator test.

Try turning the key on-off 3 times and see what happens, or go to Autozone and have them read it for you.

Agree.

If the check engine light is just on (not flashing) and everything seems to be running fine, it should be OK to drive it to the shop where I would suspect your grandfather has a code scanner and can read it for you and help you analyze what it means.

If you hit Autozone or get the code by the key trick, post it up here and folks can help analyze what it really means and recommend some steps to correct it.

You would need a code reader for an 01.

I dont think the key trick works after 97 to pull codes. Buy a code reader, or scanner. Preferably one that displays live data. You will need that stuff at some point anyway. I use an Actron CP9670, for my 97. It reads engine codes only, and displays live data.
