I have everything an 01 xj with 188k I recently bought it and I bought it not running from a friend and I went to get it yesterday well before I went he called me and it was running but it was a rough idle. Then when I went to get it it was dead so we tried jumping it off and nothing. Sleep I bought a new battery and now it'll try to crank but all it does is try to turn over but it's just an ever lasting noise and every once and a while it'll make like a baffle sound out of the exhaust like it fired one little bit. All prior knowledgeis that it has a new top end and the bottom is recent and it's has a push rod replaced in cyl 6 and a machine shop has checked the head and they said it was fine. Today I plan on running a compression test and the spark plugs look fine but the look new and they look like someone didn't gap them.. Thanks ahead

Having a hard time following your post. SO it now is a crank/no start situation correct?

If this is the case, always go to the basics first. Id start with spark and fuel. I would bring the compression tester with me but I would start with those two first.

Its an 01 so it has the coil pack which is less to fail but at the same time can be a pain to check for spark. Do you have an inline spark tester? Something like

Im guessing you mean "coil" Pack. Thats a good start to test your coil but the computer sends a signal to the coil so it can fire on time. This is based off of what your crank sensor is doing.

Replacing parts can be frustrating and expensive. We still cant help if we dont know if your getting fuel or spark. A spark tester is cheap and can be picked up at your local parts store. Its one of those tools that will come in handy many times in the future.

Okay so here y'all go this was last night I took a video and do note how the lights go out when I try to start it so I went and bought a new one and it still does the same thing but the lights don't go out anymore
