Idid say sorry and it was a day later how long should I have waited to try on my own? I stated that I had done it already to show I wasn't guessing and was giving presser reading from what I had done. Yes I got the tank and pump for free. All the yards round here poke holes in the tanks and when I was willing to fix the holes I found every xj sitting on the tank

Firstly, that kind of question is ridiculous. You can do anything you want. People responded assuming your bad question was really "Should I do this..." so they gave you their advice. Most of us, unless we keep $100 bills in their front pockets, wouldn't swap a tank with the pump in the top instead of the side mounted style, pay more for the assembly the has the regulator combined etc etc. If this was junkyard wars, that's fine but people are giving you advice based on what they would do. Most of us on here ask questions before we start a job or if we are looking at parts for sale etc so we don't make a bad situation worse. Who knows what your technical ability is, if you have a pressure gauge to measure it, have you done it before etc.

You can put the tank on the front bumper or inside the cab if you want. Do whatever you want.

Secondly, a "Sorry" never hurts either.
He did apologize for the record.

All other posters forgot one difference. He is running the factory 87 fuel pump resistor. Witch means less voltage and that means less pressure.

He can bypass it. Mines an 85 w/no resistor.

Why would he do that? Then he would have to much pressure.

They frequently get pulled when they go bad, they really aren't necessary.
Probably installed as a result of too many "what is that angry-bee noise way in the back" complaints from customers who were used to mechanical fuel pumps and carbs. Hey, it was '87...

Interesting take on that, I wonder if there is some truth to that.

I think so. My '87 doesn't have one anymore either. It's the noisiest in tank fuel pump on anything I've driven. It's easy to replace though compared to a lot of others.

This is my third pump but only the original failed after sitting for 7 years. The 87 tank was rusty and finally started fouling the pre filter pump was loud as all get out replaced that pump and tank with one from a 94 I think? Pump was quiet only problem was gage read backwards the plastic skid held mud and tank rusted out. Found a guy with a tank and pump from 2000 and when I called him hie girl had just run out of gas 3 miles from me and I hade 10 gal in cans from out the jeep his girl got gas I got a tank and pump then I ask a stupid question and the rest is history

Good times
