Why would you do that? The later model pump is twice as hard to get to and 3 times as expensive... Why not find the right tank. I have 3 of them just laying around.

Don't do it.
The pressure difference is great enough that your OEM rubber lines will all need to be replaced with the same hard line that are found in 97+ XJ's.
Your fuel pressure regulator isn't up to the task either.
You don't have a pulsation dampener on your fuel rail either.
So again....don't do it.

Unless you replace ALL OF THE FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS, don't do it.
Wanna see your rig go up in flames? Half-a$$ it and that is exactly what will happen.
Leave it as-is.

I kinda like fire and have already done it with a return I don't see where the pressure is any higher still got the reg on the rail and I'm guessing the pump is regulated to?

Ever stop to consider why newer XJ's use the haed plastic lines?
97+ fuel pumps output to the rail is 49 psi, your 87 is 36. Your rubber lines will burst.
Don't do it unless you replace your rubber lines with hard lines.

Do you have a 13 gallon tank? I have one and I want to put a 20 in, dorman makes a twenty gallon for it, if you her it make sure you get the pump for the twenty gallon. I sell auto parts and I thought about doing it in my 88
