MODERATORS: We need some changes in the Fab section!
I just wanted to give my perspective as a newb to the site. I wanted to mount a light bar to the top of the xj and I know I needed to fab something so I naturally when't to the fab section and asked. I was told that I was in the wrong section. Seems like a question about fabricating something should be in the fabrication section With the people that specialize in building things. I think everyone is to quick to find something that they can blast someone with. I understand organization is important but it's really about how you go about saying it. TACT. That's what pisses people off and runs them off forums like this. I have been a member of several different forums like this and I find the same argument everywhere. Your never going to get 100% of people to do everything right so just take a deep breath and Nicly correct them. Just my two cents

And its people like you that have ruined countless forums all over the net. You think that because you have 3000+ posts that you should be able to decide who gets to post what where. This is a public forum on the most public media in the world, who are you to tell me I dont understand what the fab section is for? The vast majority of the users on this site are newbies, what good does it do to inspire them and then flame them for posting questions about the very things that inspired them? Forums are for people to learn, ask questions, and get answers. And as a side note I find it very ironic that you call yourself a hippie when your ideas seem more like that of a dictator
Someone really pissed in your cherrios this morning didnt they? :P Yeah i understand what a forum is for, and i also understand what organization is for. If you cant handle the little tiny bit of flaming you get here on CF, then you better just start trying to grow some thick skin. Go ask a question in the wrong section in a place such as pirate4x4 or anywhere else, then you'll really know what flaming is.
If you cant handle someone else's opinions, then please give them your own opinion. However if you cant give an opinion in a mature way, then feel free to take those two little clicks to log out

it was decided a while ago what should be considered fab or not. like some have said, if you are simply talking about building something, that is chat not fab. for example: say you go to a fellow jeeper's house. you guys talk for a while about bumper or roof racks and you head home. your wife asks what you did while you were at your friends house. you dont say "oh we fabricated a bumper" you say "oh we chatted about building a bumper and what would be involved in doing so" its really not that hard to understand.
and adding another subforum just creates more work and more areas for people to wrongfully post in. we do realize there is a never ending problem and we have been trying different ways to minimize it.

I had to get a cigarette to read the first post of this thread..
Nobody reports anything in the FAB section.. I've found Spammers in there that people replied to.. Seriously? Nobody could even report that? How freaking lazy!
Maybe we should fix the FAB section so new threads have to be APPROVED by a staff member before it go's up.Now wouldint that be a ***** for everyone and ruin the fun.
We cannot and will not sit here 24 hours a day refreshing the FAB section over and over looking for chat threads. It's impossible to watch especially when you have a life outside of the web.
I'm a fabricator and mechanic by trade so it's easy for me to tell what belongs and what dose not
Thing's such as.. Building a subwoofer box for you trunk I do not see as FAB. Let's see.. Started with a sheet of plywood.. Cut it into 6 squares.. put them together with glue or whatever and make a hole for speaker and then cover in carpet and done.
^^^ That is CARPENTRY! Not FAB!

I guess it's all in how your looking at it. Chatting could be about anything you just want to chat about. call me ignorant but I would not think to go to chat to talk about building something when their is already a fab section. I would think fab section would have people in their that know about or have some experience in building things. chat sounds more like a place where I would talk about my plans for the weekend. I understand what you are saying but don't think that is how the majority of newbies like myself would be prone to look at it. But with some friendly people and fermilerization one could learn this and it would be fun and positive place to meet some smart people and learn something.
Ps: go ahead and call me ignorant. I know you want to

I'll try to use an analogy. No offense to any union guys on here, but from the engineering side of things that I come from, this is like a stereo typical manufacturing plant with union workers. You can't expect the people to have to use apply their brain power or do anything that's outside of the set job description because it's "not their job." The people on the floor pretty much have to have everything spoon fed to them. Manufacturing engineers have to lay the process out step by step for the guys on the floor detailing everything they HAVE to do. For instance welding a given assembly that needs to have a smooth surface. Generally speaking (I know, there ARE good people/workers out there) you can't expect the floor guys to grind off their weld splatter, if you haven't told them they have to by giving clear instructions that X area has to be free of weld splatter. I've had this exact scenario come up and it was a rather expensive fix because someone didn't care enough to pay attention to make a quality part. Or better yet, welding a part and leaving gaps in the weld you can see through (when it's supposed to be a solid weld!) It's not enough that we build military trucks where I work that servicemen could get killed in if they don't work right. Nope, it's "not their job" to go above and beyond the minimum requirements and most of the time they don't. It's amazing the defects and reworks that has to be done because people just don't care.
The same concept applies here. If you don't lay it out for everyone where they have SUPER easy access to the info that is easily understandable, people generally won't seek it out. Having to read a sticky is not SUPER easy (though you would think it should be!) If you don't believe me, go back over to the fab section and read all the posts that were put up in the last 24 hrs that aren't jiving with the intended content of the section. Then come back and tell me it's so easy to read the stickies that everyone is doing it.

I know how to simplify it. Let's make a
Metal section
Carpentry section
Plastic section
And five hundred more individualized section so that everyone knows exactly where to post stuff. Or we can be a little understanding and redirect folks that don't know. They will learn. Not everyone is on your level of skill and to them that wood box that took them all day to build is something they are proud of and who are we to say they can't share it. This is a public forum and anyone should be welcome.

Depends on how good you are, and if you know what your doing to build a proper sub box you need to have the right amount of space for air flow ect! When you get into the Fiberglas it's different!

That reminds me though of a point I don't think I really mentioned before. You don't want sections to be too vague, or they become useless. The whole bit on questions about fabing stuff comes up a lot. If you have a question on how to build a bumper, where is the best place to get the answer? Would it be the fab section where the fab people hang out, or the chat section where everyone and their step sister are talking about CAI's, their death wobble, how to modify an A/C compressor to be an air compressor etc.? You post in the chat section and your question is going to get lost in all the other posts and you have a much lesser chance of having the guy(s) that you need to see it to answer it even seeing the post.
I'm not saying we need a section for every two letter combination of the alphabet, but we do need a more specific breakdown for fab related issues.
