Hmm where to go this weekend... we were originally going to try Top Of The World but due to a road closure and the fact that we didn't want to drive an hour and a half out of our way we decided to hit Hey Joe Canyon. This is another trail on the outskirts of Canyonlands NP. It drops off the rim into a smaller canyon then follows the Green River for a ways before turning into HeyJoe Canyon and ending at an old Uranium Mine. It ended up being a pretty fun trail. One thing I will mention now though is if you don't want to scratch your paint job don't try this one. Its tamarisk hell in some spots and very skinny the whole way
A zoomed in shot of the HenryMountains on the way to the canyon.

I am not sure how many feet this road drops in the next mile or so but it's a lot... notice it down in the bottom of the canyon.

Looking back up the road... it goes right between that notch in the middle of the pic

You can see the cut for the road in the left hand upper corner

Looking down the canyon

Looking up at the sheer rock walls

The Green River

Navigating one of the many rockslides across the trail

Looking up the Green

More Slides

Just wide enough

During the second half along the river you are almost always in tamarisk... it almost ripped off my roof rack a couple times since the rack kept getting caught up in the branches.

Around another bend in the river

An old bulldozer marks where you turn off the river and up into Hey Joe. I can't imagine driving that thing all the way out there back in the day.

More canyon walls

Looking up Hey Joe Canyon

And back at the Green

The sun messed up the camera in some of these... more rocks

End of the line

Hmmm which one is oldest

Old mining equipment

What is left if the mine... most of the entrance has caved in or was filled in

We hung around and ate lunch at the mine and enjoyed the awesome weather. Another February day in short sleeves
Then we headed back the way we came along the river.
More old Mining remains

We also stopped along the river for a while

More random canyon pics

Back over the rockslides

This was a sweet trail for something different. It was fun following the river the whole way and being in the bottom of the canyon looking up instead of on top looking down.
