Default Transfer case -odd device, what is that?

Gentlemen,
I took the challenge to replace all oils (front and rear axels, automatic transmission + Filter, T-case fluid). IO fitted the car up and discovered something which is not in the manual. My transfer case has some additional device fitted. Please see attached photo. What is this ? What is the purpose of this device. It covers the t=case’s palate so I can’t ever read the type or model of the T-case. The car is G.Cherokee SX CRD2.7 diesel 2004. It has Quadra-trac written next to gear shifter. As I just discovered it has open differentials, because wheels are turning in opposite direction when moved on the stands. Please advice. Cheers

Never have seen that! But it resembles a type of PTO, power take off. A belt wraps around those pulleys then drives an attached device.
However, this is just speculation. Next guess..

If the big piece spins with the driveshaft then, yes it is probably some sort of PTO. If all is stationary then I would guess it is a vibration damping unit. I've seen and owned cars with a steel weight hanging off the end of the tranny and that is what it was for. That one is rather complex however.

They're vibration dampers, nothing more.

I agree. Remember it's a diesel and the power pulses are not gentle. The spinning part works like the harmonic balancer on a crankshaft.

looks like it's just the weight for dampening (as mentioned) Pretty much the same as on a Ford ranger 4x4
