Default Steering Problems

Returning from a trail run last week when my 95 Cherokee decided it did not want to turn left. Would turn a small amount but had to back up to make a left turn. At first thought my front locker was on. It wasn't. Got home and played around with it. Checked fluid, OK. Out of 6-8 tries, it did turn left once. Have no idea why. Is my steering box shot or is there something else I am missing? Thanks.

Check your track bar, that might be an issue. It may have loose or even lost bolts.

One of the problems with our XJ is that the front frame rails don't hold up well with the larger tires we are throwing on them. It is a good idea to throw a brace from the other frame rail. Also stiffeners will help prevent the failure around the steering box.

This happened to both my sons XJ and mine, very common. Here is a link to the page (next 2 pages) of my fix for mine. http://www.cherokeetalk.com/forum/f2...99/index7.html

I went ahead and formed a heavier plate to wrap around the area where the crack occurred (in addition to the stiffeners) to add strength to the area. So far it is holding up well.

Track bar is fine. My steering box is actually bolted thru the 1/4 inch plate that holds my bumper and wrench. Box is NOT moving. All tie rod ends are less than a year old. Is it the box?

Might want to delete that before a mod does this section for all ages.
