Re-manufactured engine, buy from who?
Where would you guys get a re-manufactured engine from?
I have a 2000 XJ. Short history is about 40k ago it had the lovely cracked 0331 head. Was replaced with a TUPY head. Now in UOA I'm seeing excess aluminum and iron. I'm thinking I better start looking now before I'm totally stranded.
Frustrating part is most of the engines I'm seeing advertise "0331 head casting". I don't want another 0331 engine/head combo.
I've searched on Google, even tried searching this site on Google and I'm not finding helpful info on who to avoid, and who to buy from.
I just don't want to lose my TUPY head with another junk 0331 head.
Thanks.

I was satisfied with City Motors in Dallas, TX.
Have them rebuild just the short block, or send the whole engine to them with the stipulation that you want your TUPY head back.
If your block is bad, they should be able to find one for you. Dallas/Ft. Worth is a big area.

If my block was re-buildable I would have it rebuilt at a machine shop that way you will have the say as to what old parts are reused in the build and what is new. IMO much better than buying one rebuilt and not knowing exactly what they have done or reused.

FWIW, I replaced my tired 4.0 with a remanufactured engine from RMP, now Powertrain Products Inc.
The first motor they sent died after about 5-10,000 miles after a piston skirt broke and ended up in the oil pan. Jeep sounded like somebody shot it.
They sent a new one at no charge, and this one seems like it's holding up, although it's noisier than it probably should be.
During this process I was also warned to stay away from Jasper. If I had to do it over again I'd try to have my original block rebuilt.

I would have to disagree on Jasper engines. I installed a 4.0 in my 97 grand Cherokee. 60,000 miles later still running great, no leaks, no problems at all.

One experience does not cancel out an Internet full of complaints, complete with actual measurements taken of components after they failed, proving that Jasper re-uses old parts that should be replaced, that they will mix and match bore & journal sizes (boring out only the bearings or bores that are damaged, instead of boring them all the same, which is the only correct way, and used to be standard industry practice), and other shoddy practices that maximize profit at the expense of durability.

Nope, those holes are only there for sand removal after casting. The freshly cast blocks are flipped upside down onto a shaker conveyor belt and sand pours out of those holes. All engines of that era have the same looking sand removal holes. The only ports in the deck that are used to transfer water are the two in the very rear, the 6 on the cam side for each chamber, and the one return hole in the very front. Look at your pictures closely, the blocks deck has a head gasket on it, the sediment has collected on the gasket where the sand removal holes are. You cropped out the cam side of the gasket where you will see 6 drilled holes for each combustion chamber. If you don't like it, go ahead and drill a bunch of holes into the manifold side of the head gasket. All 4.0L head gaskets block off those holes, as they are for sand, not water.
