96 XJ..

The sounds coming from this thing right in front of the pass firewall. It clicking 2-3 times a second loud enough you can hear it w/ the hood closed. It's done this a couple times before but I never tracked down the sound. No clue what it is.

Purge solenoid. Some you can hear with the hood up, some you cant. Some you can hear from the driver seat.

Yeah I've always wondered that too. What does it "Purge" and is there a solution to stop the noise it's kind of annoying.

It is part of the EVAP system, emissions stuff. It pulls excess fuel vapors from the fuel tank and into the engine for burning. The clicking is normal. They can get louder with age, but even new ones can do it. Doublecheck the clearance between it and the a/c lines or anything around it as it may have been bumped at some point. Is there a rubber isolator between the solenoid ond firewall? You could always replace it and hope to get a quiter one if like.

What would happen if someone unplugged it?

On a 96+ (OBDII) it would likely result in a check engine light and a code related to the evap system. I don't remember the specifics, but that purge solenoid helps to create a slight vacuum in the fuel tank and a sensor is usually responsible for ensuring that the vacuum is present (the idea is that fuel fumes stay within the system and/or burned).
