Here is a very thorough writeup. Read through the entire thing ... he covers how to replace the cable, and several ways to get your hood open when the cable is broken. Lots of good pics too.

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthrea...highlight=hood

In short, you can reach up .... he shows a pic. If your arms aren't skinny enough, you need to take out your headlights.

Hope this helps.

This is the way I have had to do it twice. You remove the headlight can and all. If you pull the spring and don't mess with the adjustment screws you will not have to adjust your headlights. Once you have them out, two bolts hold the bar the catch latches on to. One bolt you can see, the other is up underneath. A deep socket will reach it. Pull both bolts on both catch bars and the hood will open

Where is the cable broke at ?If its on the latch its self thats a nightmare and some you can do with a long pray bar from under.Or some cars you can remove the driver inter fender and get to the cable but make sure you got a replacement cable once you get it open.

I agree. I had a cable break on a Dakota pickup and went with hood pins. Every time i pop the hoid on my 99 XJ, i wonder if this is the day its gonna break. Im not gonna replace cables or latches. I'll do hood pins on the XJ too. I wonder if anyone makes an external hood latch for the XJ similar to old wrangler hood latches?
