What did you do to your Cherokee today?
Differential or transfer case breather, I think , look at the top right corner of the differential housing from the back, around 2 o'clock if think of it like a clock, and see if there is a vent tube if theres not that's where it goes.

Bingo. It's a breather for sure. Bulbous thingy looks like a check valve so I don't believe it's from the transfer case or any axle.

my 2000,
again,,,started right up on first key turn, no clicks!! my new starter seems good again. i check every COLD morning. nice warm up drive today. it seems to upshift at higher rpms till warmed up,normal?. then shifting od, and tq lock is just right. any excuse for a drive will work!!
od and tq lock at ?40-50, great heat.

It looks like a broken vacuum check valve or breather. Does your XJ have a CAD D30 axle?
After 5 months of a friend attempting to fix it, he gave up and i had him tow it to a local shop. Im out of the state or i wouldve done it myself. I have a bad feeling itll be an electrical gremlin that will cost me
