Default 2000 GC rough idle & skipping/jerking over 2500 RPM

I apologize for changing the title but In new and realized after the easy answer to the frayed wire question, that I don't want to make a whole new thread to discuss the real problems of the Jeep.

My 2000 GC is skipping above 2500 RPM and rough idling. And sometimes won't start after driving to store, for instance. I have to bang on starter motor then.

Original title asked "Can someone please tell me what this is?"

Default These are probably two separate issues

The starter problem and the skipping problem.
To clarify, the wire that's frayed is the same type as the one on the left, which is still connected to whatever it is supposed to be. They both have those same connectors (are they called cattails?) but the frayed one doesn't hook up anywhere.

Default What is this where I bang on starter to get it running?

And what is the thing sticking out of this?

It's all loose and rubbery.

Well that explains THAT minor annoyance, then! I'll re-ground it. Thanks!

What would be the best order to do things, to avoid spending money unnecessarily?
Any advice is appreciated.
Here is my current plan:

1. Get error codes read at auto parts store
2. Give up and take it to dealership

But seriously, Does it sound like THIS? THrottle position sensor problems?

Someone said to first get fluid changed, and new filter.

To be of any real help to you we need to know several things all can be filled out in the user CP area. year, model, engine, trans., transfer case and any mods done to it. This saves you from having to post everything when you make a post.

I have an 04 WJ Overland edition with a lot of electronic options if/when one comes up that I can't fix easily then to the dealership I will go. Over the years on all my newer cars, trucks, SUV's the electrical has became so complex that factory diagnostic's are required to avoid just throwing parts at it.

I am not sure about the radio, but those are usually added to keep the tranny grounded. I learned that from an old mom-pop trans shop that as a rule they install a grounding strap on all their rebuilds. the reason why is on the trans that don't have them they tend to have pitting on the gears.

that being said, I did notice that mine did not have one and I plan on adding a grounding strap when I have the chance. but I think I will need a rebuild anyway.

it is called a static ground strap.. it suppress static for electronic devices.. in his case that would be for the electronics in the transmission if its automatic.. there should be one just like it on firewall in middle going to engine.. that one is for radio.. in all.. it is to suppress noise in the electrical system to keep the RADIO from BUZZING

And I thought the ground strap to the exhaust was to make sure the oxygen sensors got grounded properly.
