I'm a first time Jeep owner and new to the forum. I will start by saying I'm not a gear head in the least but I can turn a wrench. I am determined to really learn how to work on and take care of this Jeep. I love it already. I need to replace the transmission pan because it's leaking at the seal and I can tell it's warped where the bolts have been over tightened to many times. Am I correct in saying that the stock transmission for this vehicle would be a 42re? Would also like some advice on where to look online for a suitable replacement pan. Nothing too crazy but I am willing to spend a few extra bucks for a quality pan with increased oil capacity if that is actually a thing that would help with cooling or performance of the transmission. Any technical advice would be greatly appreciated from this first time Jeep owner and not so skilled mechanic. Btw it's in the heading of the thread but it's a 97 grand Cherokee. Thanks.

 

You can tell what trans it is by the pan shape. If it's mostly square with a notch on one corner, like a 45° angle, that is in fact the 42RE and you should be able to find a nice pan simply by Googling 42RE pan. Thinking I saw a sweet aluminum pan on there. Remember to use the proper Atf+4 fluid for it though. Don't want to use the wrong stuff.

 

Thanks for the info. That is what it looks like. I'll do some googling on that. Any thoughts on increased capacity pans or would a basic stock type replacement do just fine?

 

No problem and a stock type should do you fine. Pretty sure there was a sweet aluminium one that had cooling ribs or fins on it. You can also go my route and source a external cooler from a yard to tie into your system. Never hurts. I ran mine right in line with the stock cooler for added cooling. Gonna wheel the heck out of my one Jeep so it's being built to the best my budget can do.

 

Actually it is a deep pan.

 

Pricy but nice, only concern I would have is if u want to wheel the Jeep, the pan will hang lower.

 

Or, a junk yard will let you pull a good pan for about $5.

 

Absolutely. I bought a whole rear hatch from a yard for $35 because the one on my brownish Jeep had rust holes in it when I bought it. Love yards lol

 

Didn't have the glass and I had to rewire it but still, had all that in the old hatch.

Yeah that will work too. Has a drain plug, that's a nice feature for these boxes for sure.
