Default 96 cheeokee timing belt

Has anyone ever replaced the timing belt on their Cherokee or know of a thread on it. My Cherokee died last week and I think it was my timing belt. And is it a a belt or a chain?

I can tell its getting gas cuz I can hear the fuel pump running and it tries to turn over but won't. I'm not 100% sure it's the belt/chain. That's what my dad thinks and it was his cherokee before mine and he had a 89 MJ before he got the xj so he knows alot about the vehicle. Like I said I'm not 100% sure if it is the timing belt/ chain that's why i posted this thread to get other ppls ideas and suggestions

X2

1) Audible fuel pump means very little, whats the fuel pressure?
2) Pull a spark plug, crank it up, is there a nasty white spark, or a little whimpy orange one?

3) " it tries to turn over but won't"

The engine won't crank or won't start?

The cps going bad is a very common no start issue, decently easy to check as well. Make sure you're getting a good spark first.
