I found that the switch on the passenger side key lock was broken. This left the circuit closed and the light on, as a default. You have to take the door panel off to gain access and then it is a little effort to access. I'd suggest if that is OK then move to the driver's side. I chased this problem for a couple of years before I located the problem component.
do you have a picture of this switch? I just bought a 97 TSI. I gave up on the issue and wired a switch to the fuse box to cut power to the dash / dome lights.
This is the first Jeep I have owned and have had it for roughly 48 hours.

I am chasing the same issue: my truck sits for a few days undriven and I try to start it and its all dead- Jump battery and run it for awhile, OK for a while, same issue next weekend
I have been told by neighbors that my dome light always seems lit. I removed dome light assembly today, going to test wire leads. Does anybody with a newer yr model know what the other plug is that goes to a little printed circuit board-attatched to dome light assembly
I will take a pic and post it later

I have been fighting the overhead courtesy lights first it was the door switches changed each one my control center shows them off I even changed the resister I changed checked and very switch on even. Hanged out light switch on the dash qnd still as lo g as the key is in the on position all I exterior lights work when I turn the truck off and pull the key the overhead light stays on 6 months later I'm still pulling the fusem
