I do know of something that will display MPGs but it's not very cheap.
It's called a scan gauge. It plugs into your OBDII port so you have to have a '96 or later model.
It is a little computer that can scan for fault codes, it can be used as a speedometer, tach, trip computer, and it will calculate fuel economy and distance till empty.
Here's a link for it

haha I know! My gas gauge doesn't work at the moment so I just use my trip odometer. When it was working, I would tell my friends that it was an "adaptive fuel gauge" that would adjust to your driving and tell you where the best mileage was. Lmao they still believe it which is the funniest part!

Here's an FML moment:
So I'm on the way to school, I'm half asleep, It's about 6:45 on a November morning, it's cold enough to freeze hell over twice, I have a very important test that I cannot miss in my 1st hour class, My sister is riding with me to school, I have a broken fuel gauge in my XJ's original SE cluster with no trip odometer.
Here's what happened:
Got about 5 miles from home, and I stalled in the worst possible place.
The road is called "indian trail". It runs in between a lake and a bunch of rich people's houses. The thing that made it even worse was that it is a road that's the width of my driveway and it has NO WHERE to pull off onto, not to mention it has tons of traffic on it in the morning.
My sister first started B****ing at me, then she started screaming and she wouldn't shut up.
I tried my best to pull to the side of the road and I had my hazard lights turned on. I then called my mom and told her what happened, she told me that she can drive over and give me a gas can for the snow blower so I can have enough to get to a station.
I said thank you and hung up. She called back and said "where did you put the gas cans?". I then looked in my back seat, and just my luck; there were 3 gas cans sitting on the floor, all empty. I was supposed to fill them up that day.
So she had to drive over to me and weave through traffic, she had me get in the car with her and we took the gas cans to a station to fill them up. We got back, put gas in my XJ, She went back home, and I went to the gas station. When I got to school; first hour was over, I smelled like gasoline, I got a lunch detention for being tardy, and I failed the test grade.
Hope you had a good laugh because I look back on it and laugh at how everything that could have went wrong, did eventually go wrong.
Sorry to everyone on this thread if I went a little off topic. I know I got a little carried away with the stroy telling lol
