Default Cherokee fuel mileage

hey guys, just took my first road trip in my 1991 cherokee laredo I bough last Dec. and it did great!(oh, and forgot to mention on the forum that I just replaced my rear springs and gave my cherokee a 2 inch lift, it looks gooooood!)
it has 209000ish miles. I wondered what people were getting for fuel mileage out of their cherokees. i got 18.41 on the freeway, and usually get around 14.25 in the city, sometimes lower.
from what i've read thats about average or above for a 1991, and I have to say im impressed that it's getting exactly what the estimates are for a '91 after 21 years and so many miles. but, I'd still like to do whatever I can to improve my mileage. I have a throttle body spacer installed, and a ram air intake which seemed to have helped, and I always run full synthetic oil (for several reasons) any other suggestions aside from driving habit advice?

if keep your foot out of it and do alot of highway driving you may see up to 400 to 440 a tank. I average 340 to 380 a tank

not sure why, i've only been able to get about 200 miles out of a tank.... Thats not jumping on the gas and doing about 70 on the highway.. Might need to change fuel filter ?

I'm going to try this next fill up. I normally keep the RPMs under 2k and still only see 280 miles per tank.

16-21 is where most people will fall with the 4.0 XJ

Me too.

I just bought my XJ about a month ago and have gotten 14.5,
15.8 after oil change, plugs and air filter
and 15.5 on the 3 fill ups at 1/4 to 1/2 tank.

My alignment is off a bit, so it may be causing a slight decrease in mileage, but if I could pull out a 18+mpg tank, I'd be ecstatic. I've got a new air filter, plugs, fresh oil change, and use 87 octane. Maybe it will go up once I change the wheel hubs and get an alignment.

gotta have workin tps so the trans goes into overdrive and good o2 sensors probably would help too. plus other sensors as well.

last highway trip was getting 18. but i am really careful on how i drive it too. Even this surprised the heck out of me. Lets face it, these were not made for areodynamics, its shaped like a rectangle.

Because once something is talked about, it should never be spoken of again. Right?

I raised mine by 10% with an injector swap. I tested the 703/784 and found they provided more fuel than stock. Ended up with injectors from a late model 3.7 liter Chrysler. They had better fuel atomization and closer to stock fuel delivery. Complete writeup thread:

To improve my fuel economy I just swapped my trans because. My original trans lost first gear and I was getting about 10 miles to the gallon. I get 15 now and I have no complaints.
