Hey all, I scored some Infinity door tweeters from the JY and wanted to hook them up in my XJ. I have searched high and low all over the internet including this forum and have come up with squat. I've hit a dead end so I need some help.
I need to know:
1. What is the RMS of the tweeters (they are labeled for 4 ohms)
2: Can I just splice them into my door speakers or will I need a small Amp and/or crossover?
3. The backings fell off the speaker and appear to be designed to glue on. Is it ok to just re-glue it?
I already know:
1. The speakers are 4 ohms
2. Splicing into speakers isn't ideal, so would prefer not to do that
3. The difference between RMS and max

I have tweeters on the knee part of the dash on both the left and right. Only just noticed them. I did replace the head unit just recently and they do work even though I didn't realize they were there. Could I just take the wiring on the tweeters and put it onto a normal sized speaker as if it was a speaker in the door or will that not work?

What year is your xJ? Have you opened up the spot where they go on your Cherokee? Typically automakers will include the wiring for extra features in all vehicles and if your vehicle doesn't have that particular option the wiring will still be there. If you are unsure you can always look at a wiring diagram. I wouldn't splice them in because they will sound like doung
I've got a related question. Did the XJ ever have a crossover (like in a component system) from the factory? I ask because of the resistor on the tweeter, that's usually what splits the highs in a crossover if I'm not mistaken.
It did not. Crossovers are not installed on factory systems, usually the speakers are designed to be "all way." That allows for the easy simple single wire installation. Built by a car company, not an audio manufacturer.
Its the major reason even high end factory systems are SO BAD. 50 bucks worth of speakers is better than any factory system out there. you will be better off swapping out your cruddy speakers for okay ones (literally, less than $100 for 4 speakers).
Factory DECKS are not TOO bad, but in cars this old, they dont tend to have the options we want. I for one dont have tapes lying around anymore...
I am new to here (second XJ), but I have been an audio installer/designer for about 2 decades. (car and home)
As for the other part of jay_sco's question, Yes, that is what a crossover does.
Crossovers turn the speaker wire into "high range" "mid range" and "low range", allowing you to have the proper information going to the proper speaker.
Even the cheapest 3 way car speakers have a built in crossover. But I installed in a Benz SL, and found no crossover for its tweeters, and thats an $80000 car.
Thanks for the input. I've never done audio professionally but I've done all my own systems and helped friends. I recall one friend making his own "component system" by using different resistors inline, basically a DIY crossover.
And you're correct, even good factory systems fall way short of a cheap aftermarket setup.
You used to have to build your own. Nowadays a good quality speaker set COMES with them. They are actually more expensive to build than the speaker. Usually your cheap aftermarket has what you describe, 2 cheap resistors cutting off the low from the high.
To not just "cut off" the stuff you dont want, that is harder and requires skill. That is where the top notch crossovers come in. I only have them myself on my Focal 165 A1. But if you search that, you will see the pimped out crossovers that are worth more than the speakers.
Thanks for all the input guys. So I'll take a look behind the door and see if I find any wires (highly doubt it mine's a base 2.5l). Can anyone recommend a good small crossover? Also STILL haven't been told what the RMS is, if anyone knows...throw that info my way
For cheap, just do what ^^ suggests. As I said, crossovers are more expensive than speakers. I would tell you to go get another speaker before trying to cross over that one. Your stock speaker there is cheaper than that cheap chineese one he posted. You would be building a part to make a crappy part work. better to just go get better speakers.
I would tell you to go get some better door ones (50-70 bucks), and throw all these in the trash...
