Hi, I switched out the tired old dome light with small bulb in it for one with LED's. and a switch. If I want I can have the doors open and turn off the light which is nice and its a lot brighter. I noticed that the old fixture was just "hanging" off the material of the headliner, there was nothing to attach it to on the roof? I didn't know exactly what the best way was to attached the new dome light so I glued s strong magnet to the underside of it, put a magnet on the roof and they attract strongly also helping to keep up my sagging headliner! But this is s temporary fix, how am I supposed to attach the dome light without making holes in the roof? Is there something I glue to the roof and a counter part I glue to the underside of the dome light?

In an '00 the dome light slides onto a hook that is part of the roof itself but also screws into the headliner, hook comes through the headliner, with two screws. Just so happens that I have mine all apart and can take some pictures if you need. Can only guess that it is the same in a '99 which I am thinking is what you own from your profile.

Thanks Ralph, I think I must have shifted the headliner a bit when I installed my antenna ... There was some ancient antenna on the roof which I replaced with a new model for a dual band ham radio... I didn't pay attention to the dome light at the time and probably didn't get the headliner exactly back in the right place so I didn't see any attachment. That headliner stuff is nasty it feels like fiber glass and my hands itch after I touch it. I just attached a piece of metal under the dome light and it is held to the roof at the moment with a neodymium magnet... That's also holding up the middle of the headliner. The glue didn't last very long but the metal is bolted onto the light so that should stay up there! 👍🏻

Thought about what I wrote and realized it was not entirely right. The black lines in the first picture of the dome light indicates where they go into where the black lines are in the second picture which is part of the roof. Pretty sure that where the black lines are in the third picture is where the screws go through, you have to remove the dome itself to get at them, and attach to the headliner.

Ralph, I dont suppose I could talk you into a picture of the whole bracket, with maybe some measurements? I have a dome light like this that I got out of a 2000 XJ, but the bracket had been mostly cut off when the previous owners had a sunroof put in, and they jury-rigged it to hang onto the edge of the sunroof. I am putting the dome light into a 98 XJ that only had the little cheapy light that just holds onto the headliner. Thank you!

OR......if someone happens to HAVE one of these brackets and would like to get it out of their way, I would gladly pay for one!

I still have everything apart so I will take some more pictures. And take some measurements for you too. Will try to get to it this afternoon. But am a little confused. You would like a picture of the whole bracket I showed in the second picture plus those measurments? Are you trying to install an overhead console?

Yes, the whole bracket that is in the 2nd picture. The measurements would be if we end up having to fabricate a bracket, if unable to find one.

Not an overhead console though, a dome light just like the one in your first picture. The jeep we got it out of, previous owner cut off most of the bracket....and the jeep I want to use it in, does not have the bracket/had the smaller one light fixture that is similar to the rear cargo light.

Think you would be better just getting one from the boneyard. Looks like it just rivets into the cross member. Anyway, here goes nothing.
First picture
Left to right 8 1/2"
Top to bottom smaller distance 4 1/2"
Top to bottom longer distance 7 3/4"
Slotted Section:
Hole Diameter 5/8"
Slot left to right 5/8"
Slot width top to bottom 3/8"
Entire tab with slot left to right 1 5/8"
Entire tab with slot top to bottom 1 3/8"
Rivet head diameter 3/8"
Think that covers the first shot.
Second shot is to just show you how it is angled. See the bend.
Third shot
This is too show you how the slotted part extends down from the bracket.
That measurement is 5/8"
I hope the shots and descriptions I used for the measurements make sense to you.
To be perfectly frank I took the measurements and descriptions and I am lost. LOL
