charging issue

my 97 cherokee sport has a new alternator, battery and serpentine belt. it will start, battery gauge hits 12 then bottoms out at 9, then it dies. im not sure what to check next. cherokee has 265k miles on it and has been great.

battery had died and tested bad so i replaced it. alternator was for current problem as thats what it acted like. belt was just past due and it seemed likeca good time with alternator off.

sounds like you might have a bad ground somewhere. I found this thread in the OEM forum. It might help you.

just re-read your post--so was the jeep doing the same thing with the old alternator?

I would check the grounds, and check the positive leads too....also try searching the OEM forum for a similar problem....sorry I can't be more help

thanks it gives me a direction. ill check grounds once temps are above freezing. the cherokee died in parkinglot of grocery store.

Battery gauge going to 9 sounds like a bad alternator. Possible to be bad right from the store. Take it back and get another.

Update. While checking grounds found an inline fuse to the field circuit was blown. Replaced fuse and jumped Cherokee. Ran for 15 minutes, (gauge stayed at 14) then died with no indicators on dash. I'm thinking it didn't like sitting for a week in freezing temperatures. I'm getting it moved to a warmer place,(garage). Will see what happens.

Clean all your grounds & check your battery & alternator wires for corrosion & broken strands.
