I know this subject has kinda been beat to death but I am looking specifically for 97+ jeeps, examples of HF or VHF amateur radio installs. Where/how did you mount your radio, where/how did you run the coax, and what are you using for an antenna and mount. How did you run wires through the firewall, etc.
I am not looking for CB installs unless they are very well done.
My plan right now is to mount my VRN7600 to the side of the center console, run the coax along the console and then under the back seat, and up to a mag mount 5/8 wave dual band antenna. I am also considering the JCR tail light mount, but Im thinking the SWR and radiation pattern is gonna suck with the body blocking it.
For HF, I am thinking about running coax to the passengers side floor area, and using my FT817 or G90. Either one will be in portable/man pack type situations. Also thinking about the JCR mount for this, but still not sure about SWR. Not sure what to do about an antenna either. Hamsticks? Whip? Stationary ops only, with a wire antenna run to a tree?
For power Im thinking I will have to drill a hole in the passengers side of the firewall, even though I dont really want to.
I may try to run it off of a cigarette lighter for now, but I doubt that will work very good.
