Default Mystery Transmission sensor/solenoid ??

Hi,

I have a 1987 Jeep Comanche 2.5 liter inline 4 cylinder. Manual transmission. It’s been riding good except yesterday I got a bad case of death wobble, then my transmission would not shift once the truck recovered. As if it were stuck in neutral. I got underneath and noticed a “boot “ type of connector to a sensor had been disconnected and was melted on the exhaust. This was on the passenger side of the transmission. Here is a picture of the sensor the connector goes to. I can’t figure out the name of it though. Thoughts? Any help is appreciated.

Could it be for the back up lights ? most manual transmissions use a switch like that .
