Default Transmission question

Hey guys. New to the forum. I’m a new owner of a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. While I’ve never been a Chrysler guy overall I’m pretty happy with the Jeep so far. I did a lot of research on all the issues before I took delivery. I have to say I agree with the transmission complaints. It seems like it is always searching for a gear and unsure what gear it wants to be in.
That being said I know there’s a few TSB’s about updated TCM reflashes available that are supposed to make a decent improvement in this issue.
So my question is does anyone know if this would be covered under Jeep’s powertrain warranty or should I just expect to have to pay to have it done?
Has anyone here had it updated? Was it worth it?
If you had to pay for it what should I expect to spend?

Thanks in advance for any help guys.

I think it’s free only under warranty.

My 2019 does not suffer from the characteristics of earlier years - it’s not perfect but I‘m not gnashing my teeth at it daily. You must check with a decent dealer on updates, some seem reluctant to flash a functioning vehicle for some reason. If yours doesn’t have the update, some others report an improvement while some do not. If it already has the latest update then I don’t know what to tell you. It is absolutely worth the time to check.

The recall I got on my 2014 last month for a firmware update was a safety issue, so definitely free. The update was to have the computer apply the parking brake if it senses the power unit didn't engage when parked to prevent a roll-away. Shifting did improve slightly with one of the previous updates. It's nice to hear the 2019 shifts better. My complaint is that it aggressively upshifts to lower the rpm for better mileage and then hesitates 1-2 seconds pause before it'll downshift if you hit the gas. I want something between the automatic econo-mode and the sport setting. I have also heard the 4-cyl doesn't upshift as much versus the 6-cyl (but then again I found the 4-cyl a bit anemic). Mine also has the intermittent issue where backing up and then going into D, it'll spin in neutral for a second and then engage hard..

The 2014s suffered from many issues, both mechanical and PCM programming. Later models are better, but even mine has the lag between WOT and a downshift. I get around it by using the AutoStick, works for me.

Well yes, I agree that the 2.4 engine is weak, but the 2.0 is as strong or stronger than the 3.2. Love mine.

The 2.0T has a higher torque peak that hits much lower than the 3.2. Feedback I've heard is that it's much better paired and mapped to the 9-speed than the 3.2.

Thank for the feedback guys. The more I drive it the more it’s not terrible. It does seem to be getting a little better. I don’t like that sometimes it revs high and doesn’t shift going up a hill and the next time is downshifts fine. That’s my biggest complaint right now but I can live with it.
