88 xj...wanted to really restore it and make it into a beast...from what I know the engine is in excellent shape despite 225k. Exterior is perfect as is the interior. Here are the issues: slightly low oil pressure (from what the gauge says) (approximately 20 at idle and about 30-40 at approx 2000 rpms). Just gave it a tune up so it starts up smooth. I really don't wanna dump 1000 dollars on a lift and tires to find my cam bearings are shot (unless its not a major fix) personally it seems as if the oil pressure is in no way affecting the jeep. Power steering is leaking but im leaning towards it being a pressure hose leak. Just repaired steering column and locktightned the hex bolts so it shouldn't be coming loose. Jeep will get pretty warm at idle for about 5 mins...temp drops at 20 mphs. Do you guys think its worth investing in? Im wanting to throw a 3 inch rustys with some nice 31s. I've put a safari rack on it and some soft 8s (soft 8s typical I know but I like em). Brakes, tranny, and stock suspension and 4x4 seem great. Im not gonna be doing any hard wheeling..really wanting an aggressive looking old school xj. What do you think guys..start dumping cash in it or is the oil pressure and mileage too bad? Thanks all!

20lbs of oil pressure at idle is what my Jeep sits at when at operating temp. But at start up its around 45. When im on the gas its at 50. So I wouldnt think yours is to far off!! Im at 150k with my 98. These 4.0 are bullets if taken care of. Got any history on the jeep at all that might give you more direction..and what condition motor is in?? As for the temp.. mine never gets over 210, if it doesnt i have the ac on and it goes just past 210. The oil pressure could be as small as a sending unit thats bad, and the temp could be easy as a thermostat.. If it were me, I would get everything straightened out so you dont have 1500 dollars worth of upgrades you cant use. Diagnose the small problems now. So they dont become big problems later..

Thermostat has been replaced...engine seems to be excellent...jeep came with all kinds of repair receipts that have the proper vin number on it so I know it'd been taken care of. Im thinking I need to flush my coolant system cause my fluid is nasty...maybe throw in a water pump...think it is worth restoring?

That's not really low for the oil pressure, and though it does have a lot of miles it should go a lot longer if taken care of. JMO.

That`s about what my XJ does oil pressure wise (Maybe a bit better) and aside from what I see on the gauge it does'nt act like there's anything wrong so I just ignore it and it drives fine.

A new stereo always makes the car run better

"do you hear that sound?"
"what sound?"
