Default Newbie to the Jeep world.

I’m new to the Jeep world. Recently purchased a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with the 5.2 and I know absolutely nothing about it. Was told it needs a torque converter but I have no idea what trans it has. Any help or info on what exactly I have is appreciated. Tossing around the idea of making it a daily driver.

Welcome! You may be able to find the transmission type by doing a search on your VIN. Chrysler has what they call a "build sheet" which details everytihng about the car as it left the factory. La4er models you can find online. However, yours is too old for that.

But you still might find something. If not, post some good pictures of your transmission here, along with your shifter, and it's likely someone here can ID it for you.

I was looking for something else and stumbled across an old book mark. Might have some good info for you:

Is there a way to tell if I have an xj, zj or other two letter symbols for mine?

Those letters are the body style. The classic Cherokee is the XJ. There are several different flavors of the Grand Cherokee. There was ZJ, then WJ, but I'm not sure where the years break. I have a 2002 WJ.

Here are some places to find info:

https://www.jeep.com/history.html

https://www.quadratec.com/jeep_knowl...article-73.htm (complete list with years)

Since yours is a 97, you have a ZJ. Remember, it's a Grand Cherokee, not a Cherokee. Different vehicle. It's very frustrating to go looking for parts online and some clown has advertised parts for his "Cherokee", and then you find out it's a Grand Cherokee.

Thanks. I’m trying to find a torque converter for it because previous owner said it needed one because when you shift to gear it’ll cause it to die. After looking through the internet I’m fairly confident it is a 46RH
