Hi all, I have just got a 1997 Jeep Cherokee sport 2.5 diesel and need some advise.
When I put the lights on I do not get any lights on the panel/dash, is there a dimmer switch ?
I also would like to know when selecting 4 wheel drive do you do it from stand still or moving ?
When starting from cold or first time in the morning am I correct you have to wait till it completes its check and finishes beeping before you start engine ?
Thanks Reg

wish I had a works manuel.....

Welcome from TX. USA
The dimmer switch is turing the head light **** left or right.
4wd on mine is both. I have Command trac shift on the fly
Starting? Don't know but most likely for a diesel.

Welcome to Cherokeeforum!

Yes, on your 97, it should be the headlight switch itself, twist it either left or right, can't remember, and not sure on RHD XJ's. Other then that may be a cluster illumination fuse or something along those lines.

As for 4wd, the rule of thumb is 4hi is shift on the fly, for safetys sake, if rolling, always shift into netural before engaging or dis-engaging 4 wheel drive. 4 low is typically done at 3mph-0mph.

Starting, yes, thats a good rule to go by. You have glow plugs, which basically pre-heats the motor for better initial combustion.

As stated above, rotating the headlight switch **** dims the dash lights and at full turn the click should turn on the dome/overhead lights. I don't know if this diagram applies to your RHD '97 but look here for fuses: >Jeep Cherokee Electrical - 1997 - 2001 XJ Fuse & Relay Identification - Reference guide to the fuses, ratings (Amps), relays and circuit information.

Thanks for all the answers to my questions, panel lights now working after turning switch/****, started up this morning but waited for the warning light for glow plugs to go out and no smoke, my son in law to be tried out the 4 wheel drive and all working fine.
He is going to take me to Salisbury plain that is were they have training with tanks, as long as you keep your head down it will be fine he say-es.
The Jeep will mainly be used to pull my caravan and every day use.
Thanks again for help
Reg and Pat
