Or a tick over 300k if you treat them really well and get one that hasn't been abused. 200k is young for a well maintained 4.0.
so how do cherokees do with tires in the 32" range with a manual tranny? are they hard to start off?
i was just wondering because in my tacoma i have 4.10(stock) with 33's and its little hard to start off.
and i herd that manual cherokees have something like 3.35's. wouldn't it be pretty difficult to start off in those bigger tires? or am i totally wrong?

Welcome to CF. I have a 2009 Tacoma and a 1997 XJ. As far as reliability I'd say they are about the same. Off road, it would depend on how they are built. As far as gas mileage you might as well keep your Yota. I get 14ish mpg with 4.5" lift on 32's and 4.10 gears. Most likely gear in the xj are 3.55's and yes that would not be good for a DD with 33" tires. Your Yota looks great, I'd keep it.

I can squeeze 18 if I baby it, but mostly stock (4.0 AW4). People love Cherokees because a) they're jeeps. b) the 4.0 and AW4 are bulletproof. c) they're easy to work on and parts-plentiful (and inexpensive). Welcome to the forum
thanks. so what your basically saying is that they aren't very reliable? like alot of motor and tranny issues?

my old xj had 320,000 miles on it when i crossed a river in the MTS and the cold water cracked the block.. my new one i bought with 20,000 k and its now to 144,000 with no problems at all...
Old xj was a manual with 4" of lift and 32" TSLs. I was running 4.10s and had a borla exhaust and a improved throttle body and honestly it was pretty quick. They are very light cars.
MY new one is an automatic with 6.5" of lift and 34" tires also running 4.10s and i still have no problem getting going or getting up to 75/80.
As for xj vs truck, i will tell you that i mud with alot of big big trucks, with like 44" tires.. And if i go straight into their ruts, im screwed- just get high centered. But if i am in front, because the xj is so light and handles so well, i can float on top and wind around the trail much better then them and usually go quite a bit farther. its also much easier to pull me out if i do get stuck
I had an f150 with 35s on it and i have to say that with the jeep i feel much more in control, and have alot more fun then just flooring it and praying i dont hit a tree.
Another great bonus to the xj is the giant aftermarket out there. With my f150, it was hard to find parts, even harder to find ones i liked.. with the jeep there 10,000 types of everything makes it fun and easy to get what you like

o and since you ask, my wife has a 05 tacoma, trd and hers beats mine in a race.. but not too badly untill around 65... but then again it is bone stock with little tires, plastic bumper.. ect.. hers gets around 24 mpg though... as for offroad.. hers would not touch mine :P sorry for bad pic... just a cell phone in real life my door is probably 8 inches higher than hers..
FINALLY!!!!!!! someone puts some thought into a post. thanks a ton dude. ya i dont really care about racing i just want a sick looking cherokee thats very reliable and very, very capable off road. but it also has to be some what driveable at 65/70.
anyways how hard it is to regear the cherokees? i was about to regear my tacoma when i relized i needed to sell it. i would do it all myself except seating the ring and pinnion( so much that would go wrong if i did it myself)

Swapping gears is about the same as any other axle, ever yota's or ford 9" rears with the removable carrier still have to have gear lash set when installing new gears. With decent mechanical knowledge it's a fairly easy task, most every month some magazine is doing a "how to" or I'm sure there's all the info you you need available on here too (maybe with more pics too). And here in lies another reason to own a Jeep, we stick together, I'm sure you can find someone with a XJ in your area that's already done it and would be more than willing to help with such.
