Thanks for this forum! New guy from Minnesota and looking for a WJ. Had one sold b4 getting to look at it ( spun main bearing in engine so it was cheap) I thought it could be a candidate for a stroker since it was otherwise a decent WJ.
The next one (2004 WJ Laredo 4.0l ) Was looked at today by my nephew and his mechanic friend near Denver. Good thing the mechanic was there! Valve cover leak, oil pan leak, coolant low, radiator had scale, bad tires, rotors bad, rear caliper leaking. Much more wrong and so we passed. None of this disclosed in conversations with seller. Beware good people, some just want to waste your time.
I though a western WJ would be a good candidate as I live in the rust belt and most all 20 yr old Jeeps up here has significant rust problems.

Mind you, I thought they all rusted, particularly the rockers (it's in the Jeep DNA) & front fenders, round the wheel openings - or perhaps that's just a UK thing.

Here in what we call the rust belt, where salt is used on roads, they tend to rust the unibody badly. One from the SW USA or thereabouts is a better candidate for a used vehicle.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the "rust belt" & the desirability of "dry state" cars & I recall seeing cars & trucks in MN & WI with levels of deterioration not seen here for 50 years. Historically we used salt (although it was always referred yo as grit) but winter weather generally isn't bad enough any more to warrant its extensive application &, it seems, only the national highway authority can afford it in any event. However rust is still a problem when it comes to dismantling & in that respect our challenges are more akin to those I've seen experienced by those in the rust belt.
