Post new girl

Hi everyone.. my name is nicki and I'm new to this forum. I have a 1996 jeep cherokee. So I'm having some issues with it. 1. It has been running real rough lately. The check engine light is on and when I took it to auto zone to have it checked they told me it was do to the o2 sensor. Well the one under the engine/motor was just replace.. how many are there? 2. I am getting really bad gas milage, like 10 mph. I know this can't be normal. Could the bad gas milage be do to the O2 sensor?? I really know nothing about cars but I am looking for low cost ways I can higher the gas mph.. any help would be greatly appreciated.. oh and I am missing the 5.5 amp circuit breaker needed to operated the front windshield wipes. I called dealership, o'reilys and napa no one carries one.. any ideas on where I can find one.. thanks nicki

Welcome to the site from AZ and NM! and another 96 jeep owner!

to answer your questions. there are 2 o2 sensors. one on the down pipe close to the engine and one right after the cat.

The o2 sensors might very well be the cause of your poor gas mileage! (infact they most likely are)

btw post pictures of your xj!

Welcome.

If it's affecting your gas mileage that bad, it's probably going to be your primary O2 sensor, which is the one closer to the engine. Often, if one is bad, then both are bad or going bad, but only the primary will affect how the truck runs. The secondary is only for emissions.

Welcome from sunny FL (It's F'n hot!)

Going to agree with the O2 sensor diagnosis, if the readings go off then the computer will go into 'limp mode'. To protect itself it will start to run really rich, which is causing your mileage drop.
