New member from Sunny Southern California. We just picked up a 1998 XJ Sport from a neighbor for my son. 288K miles (about half are towed miles behind a motor home) Mechanically well maintained, but trim and paint have suffered from the Ca sun. Looking for on line or local places to buy some replacement trim parts. Fenders, rear license plate trim piece etc...currently it is my sons daily driver. He is a type 1 diabetic/athlete/first year college student. We have added a 100 watt solar panel to the roof rack and it in turns charges a LiFeP04 battery /Dometic refrigerator for healthy food/insulin while he is out and about.
Welcome.
As far as the door molding, fender flares, and bumper caps go many guys use Krylon Fusion.
They seem to get good results with it. I want to say they use the Satin Black color mostly.
Quick Google search will bring up plenty for you to read up on it.
Some paint them on the Jeep just masking off everything. If it were me I would remove and paint.
Bumper caps should come off easy enough. Fender flares too even though there is a good chance that
will snap a couple of the studs on the brackets holding them on. But being a CA Jeep might get lucky.
There is a quick fix to take care of that if and when it happens.
Door molding can be removed. Fishing line or dental floss to get them off.
Double sided tape to put them back on. Recommend the good 3M VHB stuff.
Or just take them off and clean the residue off the paint. Looks good either way IMO.
You will be surprised at how just taking care of that stuff will transform the appearance.
Between that and hanging out on here then you're in trouble.
Cause now you have gone down that rabbit hole.
Its infectious. Trust me on this.
What is a Jeep?
Never done IMO.
LOL.
Good idea on the Krylon Fusion. We will give that a try ASAP. Thanks! We already removed the door molding - it was pulling away on the ends so off it came - took a couple hours with goof off to remove the adhesive and once we rubbed out the paint it looks like they were never there. Big difference.
About the Refrigerator. Right now he is running my Dometic CF-35, but I want that back! Looking at finding a smaller/more efficient one for him. Battery is a Bionno 12 volt/20ah being fed by Renogy 100 panel and a little 10amp controller.
Yea - trying to do this on the "cheap" I am a HAM and the solar stuff was in my box of spare/used gear. That panel was used in my parents motor home as a stand alone panel. Older, but still puts out listed voltage and amps
