in need of some advice
Okay, ive got a 1997 jeep xj stone stock 4.0 High output engine, aw4 trans. The jeep has 150,000 miles on it and although ive done everything under the sun i fear i need to replace the transmission. After totally replacing the trans fluid including fill flush fill flush until i was satisfied, (and im a total perfectionist when it comes to my hobbies)replaced screen and pan gasket, mainly to inspect the magnet, gray metalic sludge everywhere. The fluid is still black and burnt smelling so im swapping the trans out. here is my question i know the 97's have the obdII in them but can i use an older trans or does it have to come from an obdII vehicle? Oh i forgot to mention the marbles in a can sound the tranny is making while in drive with brake applied..lol..any pitfalls to avoid when making the swap? im no noob to wrenching just new to xj's. Im planning on doing some other extras while im under there, trans cooler, heavier pan, doing away with all the quick connects and upgrading the exhaust. any advice will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately the 97 transmission is a unique year. U ll have to use another 97 transmission. I think some newer ones ll bolt up but the wiring ll be different. U ll have to do some splicing. Maybe older ones ll be the same or something
