Jeeps are a wonderful thing. But its the little quirks that make you love it all that much more. There's been two times where the hood actually closed right, right after I dropped it.

Anything will work. I spray mine down with PB blaster or WD-40 (whichever's closest at the time). PB blaster might be best as it's a penetrating oil and will creep into all the spots and help break up some gunk. My previous XJ did the same thing yours is doing until I did this, and it latched no problem after that.

BTW, CPRing your hood is a perfect description. Knew exactly what you meant.

Do you spray it often, or just when it gets kinda sticky or when the hood starts to not cooperate? Also if it isn't too much to ask do you think you could post pictures of where you spray generally? (If too much of a hassle I'll poke around and see what I can see)

I know some people just kinda slam their fist down on the corner too.

Spray in the red circle areas (not my XJ by the way). I just do it like every oil change, or if I think about it while I have the hood opened. That way it hopefully wont get to a point that it's sticky. The center circle is the one that can seize up and not let you open the hood, or break the cable. The outside ones are what latch your hood.

One of the best lubes I have found for hinges/latches is Wurth Products HHS-K. I have been a technician for the past 10 years and out of all the lubricants I have tried, HHS-K has been the best. I it comes out an aerosol can, but as soon as it hits air it becomes slightly greasy as well. It is designed for moving joints under extreme temps and weight. Its difficult to get a hold of though as you can't buy it in a store. They distribute to shops and business's only. Most European independent shops use Wurth. Its "worth" (pun intended) getting a hold of a can from them. Maybe they will sell you one, even though they are not suppose to. After a little initial cleaning, I have gotten frozen door latches on 30-40 yr old cars to work like brand new or better.

Good post, pictures always help. I will add that the cable will also corrode inside its sheath. With the hood open, try to apply lube where the cable exits sheath and let it run down inside. Work cabin hood release a few times to help distribute.

Not gonna lie I kinda expected at least one 'get back in the kitchen' esque joke. Also fun fact I got that picture from replacing the hatch supports. Don't know how I cut my finger but I just looked over and was like oh...hey.. I'm bleeding??? Probably cause I was rushing a bit.
