Default Hi there

Hi guys,

I'm currently driving an '09 Charger SRT8 and just looked a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee tonight and trying to make up my mind whether to buy it for a winter beater. Body is in decent shape, a bit of rust along the bottom of the doors and above the running boards, interior is good everything electrical works, drivers door key lock doesn't work, no major leaks, engine starts and runs fine.

Only problem is there is a crunching noise when it's moved forward or backward, the park gear won't engage. From what I've been reading online it sounds as if the transfer case may be damaged or the linkage may be out of adjustment, full time 4x4 and I didn't try putting it in 4 Low.

I have almost no experience with Jeeps, other than the military '67 pattern. I have owned and built chevy 4x4's in the past.

He only want's $300.00 for it so I'll probably end up taking a chance as the stereo is aftermarket and probably worth $200.00.

Any other ideas as to what the problem may be ?

Thanks

Stu

Hey Stu. Check to see if the front drive shaft has been removed. that would allow it to roll in park. Sometimes people remove that if they have/think there's a transfer case problem. Or they think it saves gas. (Not true). If you replace the drive shaft, do a test. In a large parking lot, do slow figure eights with the steering at full lock. If the front wheels act like they're hopping/skipping, or make a chirping on the pavement, the viscous coupler in the t-case is showing signs of wear. Not really in need of replacement yet, but you could start looking for a cheap replacement to have when you have time to replace it. A switch to a 242 or 231 would give the option of 2WD if needed. Check the different options, and get info before buying.
That ZJ is great a deal for the fun you can have. Post pics when you can.
