Default Hello from Flagstaff, AZ

Hello, Everyone. I just joined this forum. I hope to learn a lot about my Cherokee and be more proactive in maintaining it. I am currently waiting to get my 99' Cherokee back from the shop; they are installing a transmission temperature gauge for me and looking into possibly adjusting the "lash??" on the rear end. Take care.

When I let off the gas to coast to a stop light, I hear a growl in the rear end. Someone said it might mean the gears need to be shimmed from wear. The mechanic is looking at it. He did call to say three of my ball joints need replacing as well as a u-joint. Well, as they say, "Easy come, easy go" as far as the money in my wallet.

This 99' is in wonderful condition. I have not found any rust yet, but it is 14 years old, so I am finding things here and there. Still, it is cheaper to fix than purchase a new 4x4 for $35k+.

On the ball joints replace all 4, and use either spicer or Moog only. As far as your growl you may have a pinion bearing worn out, or a pinion nut backed off

On another note if you are not mechanically inclined at all then ask the repair shop if you can get your own parts and save some cash. Also from this site you can learn to do your own work in a short bit

Yes, I am replacing all 4 ball joints; it makes sense. I am anxious to get my Cherokee back. I have a rental car: Kia Soul. It is not the same. Besides, it is almost elk scouting time and I need my Cherokee. Take care, All.
