My son and I just got a '94 Cherokee Sport from some friends. They said it was making a noise from the engine, like a rod knocking, and stopped driving it 2 1/2 years ago. They gave it to us(FREE!). 217k miles, AT. We put in a new battery and believe or not it fired right up. Even with old fuel. It was smoking quite a bit but stopped for the most part after about 10 minutes. Noticed just a slight hiccup in the idle(800 rpms). Changed oil/filter, flushed cooling system, tune up, drained gas tank and new fuel filter. Still smokes but only very lightly. Never did hear any noise from engine that PO had mentioned. Crossing fingers.

How nasty was the oil in it?Some times old nasty old will make the engine run funny making noises it normally won't.

 

Oil was black but not gritty. The anti-freeze was a nasty brown and took about 20 minutes to flush out. Gas was a coffee color. Surprised it ran at all.

For giggles you could run a compression test.

Also, try cleaning the throttle body and IAC.
