first time jeep!
Hello guys, my name is James and im making my first post on here, and lurking about to find some info! I just bought a 1989 Cherokee Laredo. It's got a few miles, (>300k! LOL) but seems to be mechanically sound. So far it looks like I don't need to do much of anything to it, the radio appears to be shot, but it's aftermarket and I think it would probably be easier to just throw a new one in there.
I picked this truck up due to needing an automatic for a few months while I heal from a wrist injury, regular car (my baby really) is a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT. Plenty of mods but it's not breaking the sound barrier anytime soon, LOL. I can't shift it with metal pins in my wrist though. If this Jeep gets me through the recovery period I'll be happy and if it makes it to next winter; bonus!
I'm new to Jeeps, but not to vbulletin forums, I'm a staff member on crookedh.com and a regular on newtiburon.com. Feel free to check us out if you feel like getting lower to the ground
The Cherokee isn't much to look at (paint is pretty much gone) but if you guys would like to see pics i can throw them up, and if you want to see my Tibby just ask

Welcome to CF and trash the Ricer. You don't know what you just bought lol. If you got any mechanical experience this thing will be a lot more fun than going 0-60 or drifting.
While you have your jeep try and take it wheeling STOCK just once. You will love it.

i have actually heard great things about the 89 cherokee. supposedly indestructible! living in suburban CT, 4-wheeling is akin to shooting a panda at a PETA meeting, but hopefully i can find some trouble to get into.
LOL cant beat it for cheap fun!
thanks for the welcomes guys. i drove my new Cherokee home in a snowstorm tonight, LOL. it was fun but kind of scary on icy roads in an unfamiliar vehicle, fumbling with the wipers and such. im used to a lot more wheels on my trucks... 14 to be exact.
can someone direct me to a DIY on how to take out the radio? i need tunes man.. theres some blown out JVC tape deck in there right now, but seems to be a factory single-din. ill look around.

Welcome to CF from TEXAS. Glad to have you despite your Hyundai leanings. We will try to teach you. BTW you have purchased a great Jeep. Welcome to the JEEP lifestyle.

Hey guys;
after driving around for a few days, it seems like its leaking a small amount of some reddish fluid (assuming tranny fluid... only red fluid i know of, LOL) from somewhere near the tranny and possibly the rear diff. its hard to tell because i had it parked both head-in and out in my space, and there are now 2 spots. had the oil changed today since it had been sitting for months before i bought it and the oil change monkeys mentioned it. i had them throw some lucas oil junk (it was free, LOL) in the motor, but left the trans alone. so, long story short; do you guys think the seals/gaskets are shot; and if so can you direct me to some replacements? how easy is it to replace them? my cousin is a master mechanic so getting the actual work done should be cheap as long as its not too difficult.
