Default Checking in from suburbs of Chicago!

Hello, my wife and I have owned a Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (Yeah, it's got a Hemi!) for almost two years now, and we absolutely LOVE it. We also have a Detonator Yellow 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with a 6 speed, which I LOVE more than she does. LOL Anyways, we are now searching for a nice XJ Limited or Classic to add to our Mopar family since the Challenger is useless around here from November- April.

I have been finding a few here and there, but they are at dealers who want a lot for them, or they have high mileage. For example, I am trying to work a deal on a Flame Red 2001 XJ Cherokee Limited with 101K on it. It is a one owner with a spotless Carfax/Autocheck and is super clean with newer brakes/tires. It has been inspected and is ready to go. Dealer has it listed for $7,6xx, which I think is way too high since I am finding 1997-2001s all day long in the 5-6K range with similar mileage. Some dealers ask up to 8-9K though. I was thinking it should sell for around $5,500-6K. Is that too much for a 2001 with 101K on it? I am new to these, so forgive my ignorance.

I hate you already, just kidding. That Challenger is a nice car.
Check nadaguides.com for prices for cars. kbb.com lists are too high.

Welcome from Wisconsin. My wife grow up in La Grange. Do you bother to check out the earlier years. Here's my 1991 Limited with 70,000 miles on it right now. And I've owned it for 4 years already. KBB is $2500. Attachment 125084

I am about 15 min from LaGrange in Lemont, IL. I am looking ideally for the 1997-2001. I have seen one like yours listed right near me, but it is a red one with 77K for $2,200. If I were considering an older one, I'd definitely look. Heck, I'd buy a Grand Wagoneer if my wife would let me. She hates the wood on the sides. Plus, those can get very pricey when in great shape.

KBB is way too high for their prices, I agree. NADA says retail on that 2001 = 7,500, clean trade = 5,175, average trade = 4,475, rough trade = 3,625.

I know for a fact your are lucky if a dealer will ever give you NADA on a trade. They use Black Book instead. I'd be surprised if the person got over 4K on the trade. Edmunds TMV puts clean trade in at $4,090 with a retail price of $6,183. My guess of $5,500 sale price seems to be in line with the Edmund's TMV, which I find much more accurate when predicting selling prices. A Solar Yellow one by me with 75K sold for just over 6K not long ago. I also found a 2000 Classic with advertised 70K for under 5K at a Jeep dealer, but the mileage is lower than what the Carfax shows, so we'll see about that one...

Depending on what the accident was, I probably go with the white one. JMO!

Well, looks like that Flame Red 2001 sold. The other one with 70K on it is red according to the dealer. It was inspected for damage to the left front (whatever that means) in 2003 (no accident reported) and was in a reported accident in 2008 according to the records, which kind of turns me off. The title is clear as is the Carfax. Price is under 5K asking, and given the low mileage, it might be worth a look. The dealer mentioned it was a darker red, which I am assuming is Sienna Pearl since Chili Pepper went away on the Cherokee after 1999. Or am I wrong? If I am right, and it is Sienna Pearl, I probably will pass on it since I am not a fan of that color... Still searching!

I wouldn't dismiss a vehicle just because it's been in an accident. If the frame/uni-body wasn't damaged and it was professionally repaired, I wouldn't worry.

Was Chili Pepper Red available on the 2000 XJ's? I know it was a color on the TJ Wrangler from 98-00, and I have seen 1998-1999 XJ's in the color but not 2000s? Anyone know for sure if it was still available on the XJ in 2000? If not the Jeep I was going to look at might be Sienna Pearl, which is too maroon/purple looking for my tastes. Still heading up to take a look this afternoon.

Yeah, anyone who's interested in this should be aware of these issues. A/C does not work, brakes looks like they needed service, Car was not garage kept (could tell by all the leaves stuck in various places. Car hadn't been detailed yet when I saw it), side swipe damage to driver's lower part of door (may buff out), scratches here and there, back bumper was dented pretty good with some paint chipping (must have backed into something. Interior was dirty. Overall, if it is detailed, might be OK for someone, but not for me. Color is Sienna Pearl and mileage is actually 80K, NOT 70k. Salesman could not find it, even though I set up an appointment, so he asked if I could come back tomm? Yeah, no thanks after driving 40 min for nothing. I was in service area getting the oil changed on my Challenger when I found it parked in the bay. I HATE DEALERS!

My dad's an auto body man, almost every vehicle that I've owned was totalled. I've gotten some great deals that way.
