Default ZJ steering upgrade, but drag link and TRE at pitman are touching in the sleeve?

I can't get the adjustments as tight as I need because the two ends are meeting in the sleeve. Will this issue solve itself when I add a 3" lift later this month? Should I cut a bit off the end of the drag link and TRE to allow for further adjustment?

I planned on just driving it and monitoring the tread on my tires for uneven wear. Bad idea?

I searched all over and haven't found anyone with the same issue.

Parts:
Tie rod: Moog DS1312
Tie rod ends: Moog ES3096L (2x)
Drag link: Moog DS1310
Sleeve: Moog ES2079S (2x)

All of the part numbers you list match what I'm using except for the Moog1310 (drag link). I 'm using Moog DS1238. Only ZJ part you need to use for the upgrade is the ZJ DS1312 tie rod. DS 1310 is for the ZJ. I had no problem like you describe.

Hmm ok. I wonder if that's my issue, but I think the XJ and ZJ drag links are identical?

Edit: Just checked and the 1238 is .65" shorter than the 1310. I'm wondering if maybe that would be enough? Doesn't seem like much.

Looks like the threaded ends are different between the two. Moog says the 1310 is for the V8 ZJ only.

https://www.moog-suspension-parts.com/moog-ds1238

The oal of the 1310 is 30.83". The oal of the 1238 is 30.18".

You think the .65 inches is the cause? It doesn't seem like that is enough of a difference, but I am new to using mod parts

I posted the length comparison to show that there's a subtle difference between the two. Could be some other differences that when combined could be causing your issue. I don't ever remember seeing any references to your problem and the upgrade has been done here quite a bit. Any chance you'd have your old drag link to do a comparison with?

Found this "upon further research I found several posts on different forums that while the ZJ drag link will work, the geometry is apparently a little different and could throw off alignment etc. I found that the Moog #DS1238 is the proper drag link for an MJ/XJ but is a larger diameter than stock and the same thickness as the ZJ unit (Moog #DS1310)".
https://comancheclub.com/topic/57199...ng-componants/

Could be the reason you've run out of adjustment.

I don't want to go back and do the work again just yet, so I guess I'm going to drive it for a bit and see how it does. When I do the lift in a few months and jump in and replace the drag link. Wild that no one else has really run into this. I don't have the old part, but before I took it to the metal scrap yard I did last them next to each other and they seemed identical. Ah well.

I did the ZJ conversion on my XJ and used the ZJ V8 parts. I had no issues and have a lot of adjustment left on drag link. Don't think your issue has anything to do with lift. Sorry not very helpful cant remember the exact parts numbers. Just know they were Moog brand. I think you want to stay with the ZJ V8 parts since they are thicker and have beefier tie rod ends.

YEAH! it is.

These are the parts I used, and have plenty of adjustment.
  • Moog MOG-DS1238 Draglink
  • Moog MOG-DS1312 Tie rod
  • Moog MOG-ES2079S Tie rod sleeve
  • Moog MOG-ES3096L Tie rod end

Of course I do have a 3.5 lift with Adj. track bar and adj. control arms.

Its a no Brainerd cut it.

Yes monitor tires and learn to set toe and center wheel.
I haven't payed for an alignment on my cummins or jeep in 12 years.

When it doesnt work do what it takes to make it work. often many things work that others say don't work.
