Seems like there was a zerk fitting on there but now there's not. It's all banged up so I don't think a new zerk fitting will fit strait into it. and the rubber seal is all messed up. What is this cylinder thing called and how do I take it off? It twists freely from left to right and I tried prying it off with screwdriver but nothings working. I'm trying to overhaul my Ds and this is obviously something I need to get fixed

Unless you marked everything before you separated it....you're going to have to take it to a drive line shop to get it balanced.

The part you knocked the zerk off of is the seal housing.
Your drive line shop can pop another one on for ya.

The zerk is intended to be there, as stated if you did not make a reference mark it will need rebalanced. At this point I'd say go to the bone yard and get a mother one.

Taking it off is not the problem, putting it back on in a different position is. That throws the balance off. Note the counter weights welded to the shaft.

They are welded on based on the balance requirements of the shaft with the slip yoke installed onto the main part of the shaft.

Put them together wrong and you'll ruin your u-joints in no time flat.

Dammit I got this one for free today and thought I saved some money, I guess I will be needing to go and buy one from the junkyard anyways

The guy from bleepin jeep took his off with no problem and didn't mention about marking it or anything to make sure it's still balanced..well this sucks

chillax. you don't need it rebalanced. If you phase the u-joints together, then there are only 2 ways to put it back together.

Phasing means the yokes are in line with eachother on each end. put it on one way, if it vibrates, pop it off and put it on the other way. done.

All the 'splainin' you need is in the pic you posted.

Look at the position of the ears and put it together the same way.

it takes a drive in grease fitting and the picture the yokes are not right. they should be inline with each other it can only go one of two ways
