Would it fit to allow full width axles? I'm looking for a 3/4 ton axle swap and this seems built well.. Help??

 

Being its a 85 its only 55 inches wide and your stock rear axle is 58.5 inches if i remember right.Only toyota axle close to full width is the t100 truck everything else is jeep size or smaller.

3/4 ton full width is kinda a joke,For the money it takes and those axles are good tell 37s where 1 ton axles are good tell 40s.You could go upgrade and not that wide like fsj 1980 and newer jeep wagoneer front dana 44 and isuzu rodeo rear dana 44.Both are pretty close to stock width and a upgrade.

Unless you got a lead foot you can beef up the dana 30 and 8.25 to handle 35s.A full width dana 44 will be 70s f250 which isn't the easiest thing to fine.If you go 1 ton a 85-96 dana 60 is easier to find.Or you can go 99-04 super duty but the rear axle has to be from the same truck they changed the bolt pattern on those.

 

A local salvage yard has 2 J10s.. A 77 and a 78, are those axles worth looking Into?

 

Both of those are the wrong side drop,The diff is on the passenger side and you need a drivers side.The fsj changed to driver side is 1980 but 79 and older is passenger side.

 

Have you ever drove this on or off road or is still being worked on?


Like Andrew said a D30/Chy 8.25 works fine with 35's that is what I have mounted on my beadlocks. All that is required with them is "Common Sense" in the tough areas, as with anything.

 

it's being driven on and offroad. And suggestions to beef the axles up then. Gussets, truss, gears.. What else?

 

You can truss and sleeve the dana 30 upgrade axles and diff,You can even do the wj knuckle and brake swap that gives you bigger brakes and high steer.Unless your trying to build a pro rock crawler you should be fine with the stock axles beefed up just pick your line and think before you floor it.

What breaks stuff is you have a wheel stuck and you floor it the power always finds the weakest link.Really no axle is going to be bullet proof i have busted the diff on a dana 60 before lol.

Mine is stock also just carry a spare set of axle's, I do in a nylon bag strapped to the roof rack with a few more parts. So far have never had to use them and hope it stays that way.


More care is needed with my beadlocks and 35's because I air those down to 5 psi at times depending on conditions then back up to 10-12 when on good parts of trail.
