Default won't come out of 4

I have 98 cherkee. Me and my friend were messen around flexing on rocks in his drive way now it won't come out of 4 no matter what I do... Any ideas?

Shifts into 2wd fine no grinds like butter. But stays in 4

Get under your jeep and check the linkage. Make sure it's still connected. And try turning it by hand with some pliers from underneath.

At speed, in a straight line, make your shifts from 2wd to 4wd. Let off the gas, move the shifter, tap the gas, let off the gas , apply the gas.

2 bucks says the linkage rod popped loose from the body bracket. That or the rod is sliding in the collar.

Could be. But it would be under less stress if the proper shifting method is used in the future.
