Short answer: Yes. depending on your setup/condition will depend how much you have to move over

I'm not really an expert but I know that at the very least the tranny, transfer case and front axle have to be in good shape. You can simply switch over those parts to your 2wd to convert it

I believe it is all bolt in. You need the front axle, front and rear drive shafts, tcase and trans. Along with linkages and such...

Everything is a bolt in swap.. are both Jeeps the same trans and engine?

If the gear ratio matches your golden. Plenty of info on exactly what needs to be done can be found in a search, it's been covered heavily.

Default Yes they will fit, but...

Good timing, I'm doing the 4x4 conversion to my 96 this weekend. You will need pretty much everything that makes sense i.e. transmission, transfer case, front and rear drive shafts, and front axle. This is a lot of parts and that's why it's a good idea to have a donor vehicle. There are several logical things to take care of too. You must have front and rear gear ratios that match. If you don't know how to find this information there are several very good threads around here. I'm just taking both axles from the donor vehicle. The main thing that you have to worry about is making sure the transmission and speedometer wiring will match up. As far as I know all the AW-4 automatic trans wiring is the same, but the plugs where the trans attaches to the ECU are almost guaranteed to be different. I will try to point you in the right direction here but you are crossing generations so the wiring will probably be different; for this reason I chose to get a donor vehicle that was closer to my 96, I got a 94.
So under you 96 hood should look like this:

Close up of red:

Number 1 is the Neutral safety switch (NSS), this should be the same through 90s years.
Number 2 is the speedometer and transfer case shift position sensor, This will have to be converted for either to work correctly.
Number 3 is the o2 sensor for the exhaust, this was put in the transmission's wiring harness in 1996 and must be CAREFULLY separated from the harness upon removing the trans.
Number 4 is the Transmission Control Unit's connection (TCU) to the transmission this depends on the wiring of the 90 I'm not sure if they are the same but hope for the best.
For the one that have to be converted it is easiest to get the 96's version of the plug from a junkyard and do the rewiring while the trans is outside of the vehicle. In my case the wires were the same color across the years so it made wiring all the better. This should give you the run down of what was for me the hardest part of the conversion. I wish you luck.

OK so since I will be using both front and rear axles from my 90 ...I wouldn't need to worry about gear ratios ...right? (Crossing my fingers lol)

That's right.

I will do some more looking tomorrow, please take some pictures of the 90's wiring. I wonder what it's missing... oh wait
It shouldn't have the o2 sensor, and in the 90 the speedometer is cable driven. Humm... Might be a little more to do here than bolt in, but if you are in it for the long haul I will try to help. You've got me interested now, I'm off to go see if you can convert a cable spedo to electric...
