Default Will I be able to use a front driveshaft..?

Hello all,

So in the planning stages of my lift, it's been really bugging me about whether I'll need a SYE or not, and what kind of vibes I might have to deal with once the lift is on. I'll be sitting at 5.5-6" with 35's eventually. I have the NP242/C8.25 29-spline and I read somewhere that this is the most likely combination for bad vibes. I've heard that you can run a front driveshaft with a Hack-n-Tap on the 242. At my lift height, will this work?

Also...could I do the SYE before the lift, and still use a front driveshaft? Thanks guys...still a noob in this department I just want to be as prepared as possible come lift day, and do whatever I can before then to address any possible vibes before they even happen.

Yeah you can run a front shaft with the hack n tap, you will have to lengthen it though! however, i ran a 6" lift with 35's for 3 years with basically no vibration, and drove on the freeway every day then wheeled on the weekends, never once did i have my shaft fall out on the trail without the sye kit either but and SYE is a good idea and highly recommended..but i'm still not running one to this day, and probably never will.

How do I go about lengthening it? Could I use, say a ZJ front driveshaft instead? I hear they are a little longer.

You can lengthen it by cutting it and welding a few inches of DOM in, I'm sure there Is a writeup somewhere.. As far as a zj shaft...i don't know how long a zj shaft is, but after its lifted, measure how long your shaft needs to be, then see if a zj shaft will work..it is possible...your other option Is a tom woods, or any other custom shaft, but they run close to 3 to 4 hundred bucks.. But they are stronger than crap!

I'm just looking to use it as a temporary solution until I can get a custom DS. I guess I could just drive it in front wheel drive

Yeah once you get the SYE and lift on, measure yoke-to-yoke and you'll get your DS length. Front wheel drive for the win.

You rock, as always. Very helpful info. I should start my build thread soon. I got a few things to throw in there but was going to wait until I get started on my rust repair and Monstaliner project which is also around when I'll be putting my new BW flat flares on That is #1 priority then things will really start rolling from there hopefully
