This ok to do? Or a very bad idea? All input/thoughts/opinions/experiences welcome.

Ya the trails are gonna kill your tires lol. I always take mine out in the gravel pit behind the shop for a quick shake down before I do an alignment. There easy enough to do yourself

Line it up yourself.

All an alignment shop is going to do is set the toe and straight the steering wheel if you're lucky.

You can do that with a tape measure and 10 minutes.

Set the toe toe 1/8" in.

Then go wheel.

Like he says, do it at home, its pretty easy. As far as before you go wheeling, how much driving is involved to get there? If its close and you are not that far out of alignment probly no big deal, but if you are driving a lot of pavement it could wear your tires funny and or cause a death wobble

Either get it done, or do it yourself. Driving un-aligned is not fun. My front tires were worn down very uneven just from a month of driving before getting it aligned. I will never make that mistake again.

ouch. just went out and measured it, i'm sitting at roughly 9/16" toe in. reckon I should fix that!

I got a feeling it's more from the slightly bent tie rod than from the lift though

Well that's not surprising. XJ factory tie rods suck.

Throw a ZJ rod on there instead. My XJ was actually better aligned after I lifted it as well.

I had an inch of toe in on my jeep but that was because my tie rod was touching my diff cover
