I want to fab a front stinger tube bumper down the line
but dont really like the look of them on the xj to be honest...
and I feel like it would **** me off having it on all the time for daily drives
anyone ever built or heard of a removable stinger?
is it possible to make one thats just as strong and functional as a welded one?
thats my biggest concern

There's only one true purpose for a stinger, so there's a couple questions you need to ask yourself: (1) do I like the looks of a stinger? (2) Am I hardcore enough to actually put it to good use? i.e. have it save your **** in an end over end flop.
You already answered one of the questions, so will it really ever be needed?
Personally the disconnect stinger sounds weak, considering the whole weight of your rig will be on it...

a stinger is not for recovery, if you hooked a strap to a stinger you deserve to be hit in the face with it at 100mph.
recovery points are for recovery, a stinger is to keep you from flipping end over end front end first going down a seriously steep departure.

You can mount lights on smaller hoops and protect your winch as well. If you don't have a winch or plan to mount extra lights I only see it being there as possibly grille protection or just for style?
