Well I was all excited.......
If this issue has been posted before I apologize, kind of stuck and need to know what to do next, so the xj gurus seemed to be the best ones to ask. So I picked up an xj from my buddy that blew it up, it's a 2001 4.0 sport. Pulled the engine and all that good stuff, after a bunch of research online I found that an engine out of a grand Cherokee 4.0, '98 to be exact would work. Awesome!! My buddy had pulled this engine out of his sons grand, so I took home, changed the oil pan gasket, head gasket, manifold gasket, water pump, head bolts etc... Been real busy so I haven't been able to mess with it, so I took it to the shop yesterday to have them get it back together for me. Now today they called and said they don't think it will work. I keep getting mixed reviews on this. Any help??? It's already at the shop, so if it is doable, I'd like to get this thing going. Any help would be great! Thanks!!

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).
TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.
XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)

Blocks should be the same. Head ports are different though.
Where is the motor mount not lining up? On the frame? On the block?

Well I have the block, head, and exhaust manifold from the grand Cherokee. And the intake from the xj on there. Passenger side is hooked up, but the drivers side won't line up, leaving the engine cocked at an angle. It been months since I swapped everything, I'm wondering if maybe I kept the block mounts from the grand thinking they were the same, and maybe they're different?? Any suggestions? Don't want to pick it up from the shop and find out it was something stupid that could have been resolved.
